Amsterdam’s hofjes are courtyards tucked behind ordinary front doors. These two are free, central and easy to combine with a museum day.

Begijnhof

A medieval courtyard in the middle of the city centre, founded in the 14th century for the Beguines, a lay sisterhood of women. Behind its gate you find a lawn, the Begijnhof Chapel, the English Reformed Church and the Houten Huys, one of the oldest wooden houses in Amsterdam.

Tip: Enter from Spui or the Gedempte Begijnensloot between 9:00 and 17:00. It is still a residential courtyard, so keep your voice down and stay off the gardens.

Karthuizerhofje

The largest hofje in the Jordaan, built in 1650 on the grounds of a former Carthusian monastery as almshouses for widows. Two long rows of brick houses face a green courtyard with old water pumps, and the little gardens in front of the doors are kept by the residents.

Tip: The gate on Karthuizersstraat is usually open in the daytime on weekdays. People live here, so visit quietly, then walk on through the Jordaan to the Noordermarkt.

Address: Karthuizersstraat 21-131, 1015 LN Amsterdam
